Intern EU Migration & Asylum

The Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ is a leading think tank and academy on international affairs. Through our analyses, training, and public debate we aim to inspire and equip governments, businesses, and civil society in order to contribute to a secure, sustainable and just world.  

 

The Institute has three departments: Research, Academy and Corporate Staff. Within the EU and Global Affairs Research Unit we are looking for an:

 

Intern / EU and Global Affairs Research Unit (EU Migration & Asylum)

36 hours per week (full time)

Internship period: 1 March 2024 – 31 August 2024

 

The Clingendael Institute is currently looking for a highly motivated and competent intern to support its EU and Global Affairs Research Unit for a period of 6 months.

The EU and Global Affairs research unit comprises five thematic programmes, focussing on a) European integration and politics, b) the European neighbourhood and Western Balkans c) Geopolitics, d) Sustainability, and e) China. Main clients include the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU institutions, as well as the private sector. This internship will be related to programmes a and b, and revolve specifically around (the external dimension of) the Dutch and European migration and asylum policies.

 

Job description

Relevant tasks are:

  • Research assistance for projects on EU-related issues;
  • Organisational assistance for (public) events, lectures, and seminars;
  • Organisational assistance for (online) meetings, in particular contributing to content-preparation, practical organisation, and meeting reports;
  • Project support for the research team, including acquisition, support with financial project management, publications, and marketing.

 

Qualifications and experience

We would be interested if the following requirements are met:

  • Enrolled in a relevant MA, MSc or LLM programme (political science, international relations, public international law, European law, EU studies, migration studies, etc.);
  • An interest in the EU, EU migration and asylum governance, and EU-third country cooperation on migration;
  • Research and writing skills;
  • Organisational skills;
  • Good working knowledge of English and Dutch (written and spoken);
  • Team player, but also capable of working independently on the basis of instructions;
  • Good communication skills, comfortable working and functioning in a diplomatic and professional environment;
  • Flexibility, capable of working under pressure and reaching deadlines.

 

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be enrolled as a student at a university during their internship;
  • The internship period is six months with the possibility of extension. Interns should be able to commit to working 36 hours a week.
